Shankha (শঙ্খ) -Shankha or the Conch shell is an inseparable part of every Bengali household. The sound of Shankha is considered auspicious for every occasion. From welcoming a new member of the family to offering prayers, the rituals are never complete without blowing the conch. It is prepared by cutting a hole in the spire. In Indian mythology, the conch is associated with Hindu God Vishnu and he is represented carrying Shankha on one hand and the chakra on the other. The conch shell is believed to be a symbol of authority, sovereignty, and power. It is also believed to avert disasters and ward off evil spirits in the house.

Here’s a Shankha in Alpona.

Colours may vary slightly due to differences in screen displays. Made with acrylic on canvas, the painting is protected with varnish.
