Palki (Palanquin)- Palanquin derives its name from the Sanskrit  word 'palanki' for bed or the couch and later on the British called it ' Palan Queen.'

The Palki or Palanqin has been a very important mode of transport since time immemorial. The earliest literary reference to Palki can be found in the Ramayana. It was a luxury on the part of the pre-modern aristocratic and affluent people to move in palanquins, which were of many sizes and designs. Usually, the number of Palki bearers differed from two to eight depending on the size of the Palki. Harkaras or Peyadas walked ahead of the palanquins. It was impossible for the passenger sitting inside to understand when the shoulders were being changed. They either conversed amongst themselves or sang while walking with the palanquin on their shoulders. With the advent of steamers, rails, motors, the palanquin saw a decline in demand.

Here’s Palki made in Bengal Alpona design.

Colours may vary slightly due to differences in screen displays. Made with acrylic on canvas, the painting is protected with varnish.
